Purpose of the SEA COAST workshop

SEA COAST is organized to provide basic instruction on fundamentals and principles of macromolecular X-ray Crystallography (MX) to graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and more established young scientists both from academia and industry, who have background and/or are interested in structural biology and MX. In addition to fundamentals, practical guidelines for diffraction data collection and intensive training in modern crystallographic software will be provided.

The workshop will cover overview of macromolecular crystallography and all aspects of the structure solution process, such as crystallization, data collection theory, processing, phasing, refinement, model quality and validation and PDB deposition of the structural data. The course will also include molecular graphics and bioinformatics topics. In addition, the MX beamlines at several synchrotrons, such as Australian Synchrotron (Australia), Diamond Light Source (UK), and SPRing-8 (Japan) will be reviewed by the representatives from respective synchrotrons. Major crystallographic software suites, including CCP4, Global Phasing, PHENIX, SHELX will be presented along with many individual programs, (ARCIMBOLDO, ARP/wARP, DIALS, MOSFLM, PISA, Phaser, XDS, etc.) molecular graphics (Coot) and structure solution pipelines (Auto-rickshaw). All software will be taught by software developers.

In addition to lectures and tutorials, the students who have unresolved crystallographic problems, will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with the world class experts.

Applicants and Selection

The workshop is mainly intended for applicants from the Southeast Asian region, but applications from elsewhere will also be considered.
Graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, academic and industrial staff who are primed for structural biology and X-ray crystallography-based research are eligible to apply. The application will be closed on November 30, 2019 and the selection results will be announced on December 6, 2019.

Registration Fee

The 30 selected applicants will be responsible for registration fees for participation in the SEA COAST as follows:
      1. Students       5,000 Baht (THB)
      2. Postdoctoral fellows/Academic faculty/Academic Staff/National Scientist researchers       10,000 Baht (THB)
      3. Commercial/Industrial Staff       15,000 Baht (THB)

Course materials, lunch, dinner and coffee breaks throughout the workshop are included in the registration fee. However, all selected participants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging. Recommended hotels on campus or nearby KMUTT are available at economical rates.
