Purpose of the SEA COAST 2024 Workshop

The 3rd macromolecular crystallographic school South-East Asian Crystallographic Overview And Systematic Training 2024 (SEA COAST 2024) will take place at the King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in Bangkok, Thailand, From January 29 to February 7, 2024.

It is organized jointly by KMUT, and Collaborative Computational Project No.4 (CCP4), STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK.

The school is designed for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and young scientists both from academia and industry, who have a background in protein X-ray crystallography or are interested in it.

SEA COAST 2024 will cover fundamental concepts of macromolecular X-ray crystallography and all aspects of protein structure solution process from crystallization to structure refinement and deposition to PDB. It will feature CCP4, PHENIX, SHELX, Global Phasing suites of programs, as well as software programs DIALS, XDS, MOSLFM, Phaser, Coot, ARP/wARP, ARCIMBOLODO, ALEPH, ALIXE, PISA and much more. All software will be presented by software developers.

A big part of the school is dedicated to hands-on sessions, where the participants will work on their own data and structures with one-on-one assistance from the world’s renowned experts.

For the FIRST time, the SEA COAST participants will have an opportunity to collect data from their own crystals at the world-leading beamlines at Diamond Light Source (UK).

The school will include lectures on Cryo Electron Microscopy and Neutron Crystallography as well, to explain the fundamentals of these methods, and discuss some details of experimentation.

Applicants and Selection

The workshop is mainly intended for applicants from the Southeast Asian region, but applications from elsewhere will also be considered.Graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, academic and industrial staff who are primed for structural biology and X-ray crystallography-based research are eligible to apply. The application will be closed on December 15, 2023 and the selection results will be announced on December 22, 2023.

Registration Fee

The 30 selected applicants will be responsible for registration fees for participation in the SEA COAST as follows:

1. Students 5,000 Baht (THB)
2. Postdoctoral fellows/Academic faculty/Academic Staff/National    Scientist researchers 10,000 Baht (THB)
3. Commercial/Industrial Staff 15,000 Baht (THB)

Course materials, lunch, dinner and coffee breaks throughout the workshop are included in the registration fee. However, all selected participants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging. Recommended hotels on campus or nearby KMUTT are available at economical rates.
